Many VPN providers try to create this impression where hackers are out to get you, and that you're unprotected without a VPN, when in reality a VPN isn't actually needed for security, when you practice basic security hygiene.
They advertise that your internet provider can see everything you do, and that you're completely exposed without a VPN, when in reality it's limited to the domain names. We find this misleading marketing.
There are already enough genuine use cases for a VPN (like the ones we mention on our home page), but big providers usually distort things to the point of lying.
They are often overpriced, even with their discounts, and most are trivial to block in the countries where people need them most.
They say they value your privacy and then fill their own websites with trackers.
They sponsor countless YouTubers to perpetuate their misleading marketing, and the review sites which rate them highly are either owned or paid for by them. In our view, such practices go against the foundation of what a VPN provider is supposed to be -
trustworthy.
At the end of the day it boils down to trust.
Privacy policies are just words, because companies often say one thing, and do another.
VPN companies can pass an independant no-logs audit, and then enable logs after.
Code can be open-sourced, while different code runs in production.
Actions speak louder, and big VPN companies have shown many times that their 'strict no logging policy' has been anything but that.
Remember, one does not simply gain privacy just by enabling a VPN; there is only a transfer of trust - from your internet provider to your VPN provider.
Privacy is only gained if the trust moves to a more trustworthy entity.
